Making the 1957 Party Dress
My experience making this dress.
VINTAGE RELEASES
The 1957 Party Dress was the second pattern I digitized. I love this dress! Even though it is a bit complicated, I happened to have the original vintage pattern in 2 sizes so was able to check how the complicated pieces were graded. I made this dress for my birthday celebration in 2022. I used a border print from Mood Fabrics and cut out the front drape so that the pattern fell nicely across the front. I lined the entire dress with tricot and think that it gives a much cleaner finish to the neck and armholes. I don't like that most vintage patterns use either a bias binding or rolled hem to finish the edges. I also added pockets to the full skirt.
The dress went together pretty smoothly and there we no big issues. I do not really think that there is a good reason for the way the back zipper is installed and would probably just install starting at the neckline if I made again. I almost always use an invisible zipper, so I used one on this dress as well. I also usually add a waist stay if the dress has a separate skirt and bodice in order to support the skirt and keep the dress stable while wearing it. The front is a little tricky - you do need to add a bias finish to the neckline of the actual front pattern piece, but once it is all basted in place, it makes sense.
Since my dress was for a special occasion, I added clear sequins the the front drape. I did so before I pleated the piece but avoided the pleats and hems while working. After the front was completed, I added in a couple of sequins in areas that were missing them. I am really thrilled with the dress, it's one of my favorites. I would encourage you to try it.
