The Knot Jeans
Designing the pattern and making the jeans

These were the second pair of jeans I made. I had just finished taking a jeans class from Jennifer Stern on Pattern Review and was amazed how easy they were to make. I was immediately inspired to make my own jeans pattern. I had also just gotten a new embroidery machine and decided to design a pair of 1970s inspired jeans with embroidered belt loops. I found a great Celtic knot pattern online and I was set to go. I used Brother color #354 from their Country collection which has a matte finish and is the exact same color as my top-stitching thread. I lined the large belt loops, pockets and waistband with quilting cotton. The denim is very soft with a slight stretch.
I used standard jeans construction with a very straight leg, back yoke and curved waistband. I had originally designed the jeans with embroidery on the back pockets, but thought it took away from the overall design so omitted it. I also made the back pockets rather small because I like the look better. I do think the front pockets were a little small and I have since enlarged them in the pattern. They were not really large enough to fit anything and I really like having pockets.
Since the jeans sit below the natural waistline, they are quite comfortable. When reissuing the pattern and writing this post, I took them out again and was surprised at how nice they are to wear. I have moved them to the front of the wardrobe.
