CUSTOM FABRICS

This is one of my favorite fabric prints. The first project I made with it was a dress that I designed and made up in cotton silk. It was one of the first garments I designed after a long hiatus from patternmaking. I draped the dress and drafted the pattern manually from the muslin. I ended up not really liking how the dress looked and never digitized the pattern into my collection.
My second project was a lovely 1933 “morning frock” which I just completed recently and am considering adding to my Vintage Releases collection. I had it printed on cotton sateen. Spoonflower’s cotton sateen is very nice with a heavy weight and a smooth hand. It’s very easy to sew with. I usually use it with 1950’s styles and think that this 1930’s silhouette would probably work better with a softer fabric such as a Kona cotton.
For this dress, I made the version with the collar and added a white beaded trim and matching satin ribbon rather than the ruffle on the original pattern. I used a piece of cotton silk I had in my stash for the collar. I think the print gives the dress a 1930’s feel.
